Woolsack Way

Godalming

Surrey GU7 1JG

01483 415220

The Wharf is a local authority nursery school in Godalming that provides free early years education for children aged 3 to 5.   The nursery is accessible to all but gives priority to families with a higher level of need.  The Wharf has been educating the young children of Godalming since 1947.  From September 2008, in addition to normal term time nursery hours, The Wharf will offer extended hours childcare from 8am to 6pm for children on roll and will offer holiday activities.  Places will be limited, please contact the nursery for details.

Their professional staff consists of well qualified and experienced teachers and nursery nurses.  Staff turnover is low and staff to child ratios are excellent.  The nursery has places for 48 children at any time.  26 younger children attend part-time session (morning or afternoon) and 22 older children attend full-time. The nursery is very popular and children’s names go on the waiting list from age one

The Wharf’s support for families, childminders and other early years settings includes:

  • An outreach service for parents and children with special educational needs.  The Wharf's experienced SEN staff visit families and children in their homes , in the‘stay and play’ group or at their nursery before they start at The Wharf.
  • ‘Stay and play’ group for children under 3 with their parents and carers (including childminders).  6 sessions a week with the use of the garden and soft play area. A session for the younger parent and monthly ‘drop in’ Health Visitor sessions.
  • A Speech and Language Therapist working with children with language difficulties one day per week.
  • Parenting Puzzle. A 10 week nurturing programme for parents that encourages them to enjoy bringing up their children and get the best out of life, led by two local health visitors.
  • Lunch Club.  Children in their last term before school can enjoy a school lunch, learn to try new foods and get used to eating away from home.
  • The Wharf supports good practice in local nurseries, playgroups and reception classes by having regular meetings and practical sessions.
  • Toy library.  Families, under 3’s and childminders can use the toy library.

Infant and Nursery

School

Grays Road,

Farncombe,

Godalming,

Surrey GU7 3LT

Farncombe Church of England Infant and Nursery School provides a caring and supportive environment and has high expectations of success. The staff team is committed to creating an enthusiasm for learning and providing the best education to enable all our children to achieve their full potential.

Ages 3-5 The Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage Curriculum begins when children reach the age of 3 and continues through Nursery and Reception. It prepares the children for learning later in life by introducing the basic skills and knowledge of each subject of the National Curriculum. At the heart of all teaching and learning in the Foundation Stage is play.

Learning for young children is a rewarding and enjoyable experience in which they explore, investigate, discover, create, practise, rehearse, repeat, revise and consolidate their developing skills, understanding and attitudes. During the Foundation Stage many of these aspects of learning are brought together effectively through playing and talking. The Foundation Stage curriculum is divided into six areas of learning. These areas of learning always overlap, and children generally experience cross curricular activities. A lesson based around spiders, for example, may include drawing spiders, tracing web patterns to develop basic handwriting skills, counting and adding to create 8, role play and science work using magnifying glasses, cooking spider shaped biscuits and singing songs about spiders!
